The Trinity Aquifer
The Trinity Aquifer is one of the major groundwater formations underlying the Texas Hill Country and much of central Texas. It consists of several distinct geologic formations deposited during the Early Cretaceous period — porous limestone, sandstone, and shale layers that capture and store groundwater from precipitation that infiltrates through the Edwards Plateau above.
In Blanco County, the most commonly tapped formations within the Trinity Group are:
- Hensell Sand (Lower Trinity) — a sandstone formation known for relatively reliable yields in the Hill Country
- Glen Rose Limestone (Middle Trinity) — a fractured limestone formation that yields water through solution channels and fractures
- Upper Trinity formations — shallower, less productive, and more vulnerable to drought conditions
Most productive wells in Blanco County penetrate into the Lower Trinity to reach the Hensell Sand, which typically means drilling to 500–800 feet or more. The specific depth depends on local geology, elevation, and proximity to recharge areas.
Well Depth Variation
Well depth in Blanco County varies considerably from one location to another, even within the same property. Properties on higher elevations may require deeper wells to reach productive zones. Properties in creek valleys or near the Blanco River may find water at shallower depths. Local drillers familiar with the county's geology have the best knowledge of what to expect in a specific area.
The Texas Water Development Board's aquifer viewer maps known water table depths across the state and can give a rough indication of what to expect for a specific location. However, the only reliable depth estimate for a specific property comes from the driller's experience and nearby well logs.
The Edwards Aquifer — a Clarification
The Edwards Aquifer, which underlies San Antonio and much of south-central Texas, is separate from the Trinity Aquifer and does not extend into most of Blanco County. Buyers sometimes conflate the two; they are distinct formations. The Edwards is regulated by the Edwards Aquifer Authority (EAA), which has no jurisdiction in Blanco County. Blanco County groundwater is regulated by the Headwaters Groundwater Conservation District.
The Headwaters Groundwater Conservation District
The Headwaters Groundwater Conservation District (HGCD) serves Blanco and Kendall counties. It issues permits for new well construction, can regulate pumping volumes for high-capacity users, and maintains well registration records. For landowners planning to drill a new well or drill an additional well on a property, working through the HGCD permitting process is required. Most single-family residential wells are subject to simplified registration rather than full permitting, but commercial or agricultural wells may face additional review.
